Apple Marina Bay Sands is a new Apple retail project in Singapore Bay opened for visitors on September 10, 2020.
The design of this shop, like many others before, is the result of long-lasting cooperation between Apple’s design teams and Foster + Partners team (the engineering and design ).
What is different: water and light
Apple’s third flagshop in Singapore sits on waterfront. It represents the first floating Apple Store, positioned at one of the most iconic locations in the town.
Surrounded by water, Apple Marina Bay Sands offers to the visitors, panoramic views of the city and its spectacular skyline.
New store was designed as glass sphere on the Marina Bay with an Apple logo (onto a glass) as an integral part of the façade. The transparent structure removes the boundary between the inside and outside. In the evening, the subtle interior lighting provides a warm glow to the outside viewer. The changes in the intensity and color of the light leave an unforgettable impression on visitors.
Apple Marina Bay Sands is one of the pavilions in Marina Bay. The nearby is Crystal Pavilion, the world’s largest Louis Vuitton boutique, which also floating on the waters of Marina Bay.
Apple Marina Bay Sands is the 30-metre-diameter structure, glazed dome with a black glass base. The dome’s structure is fully self-supported, comprised of 114 pieces of glass with only 10 narrow vertical mullions for structural connection.
The store can be entered through The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands via a curved stone entrance, flanked by Apple’s signature Avenue display on either side of a 45-metre long and 7.6-metre wide space. This leads to a set of escalators that take visitors on a “kaleidoscopic” journey to the heart of the domed space.
Engineering solutions: From Pantheon inspiration to sustainability
Structurally, the dome acts as a hybrid steel and glass shell, where the grid of steel sections support the weight of the glass and shading, and the curved structural glass panels restrain the steel elements laterally and stiffen the overall form against lateral loads. Integrated solar shading devices keep the interior cool. Each of the glass panels is carefully selected to meet glazing indices as prescribed by BCA Green Mark, Singapore’s own sustainability rating system.
Each of the multifunctional concentric light sunshade rings reduces in size as they progress towards the top of the building, providing acoustic absorption for the store. More importantly, they diffuse and reflect daylight to the baffle above, creating a magical effect and dematerializing the structure. At the top, a semi-opaque oculus provides a shaft of light that travels through space, reminiscent of the famous Pantheon in Rome.
Interior: Hi-Tec and greenery
The garden city ideal of Singapore flows from the promenade into the interior spaces, with ten trees placed along the perimeter providing additional shading and soft shadows through the foliage. Set within leather-topped planters, they also provide comfortable places to sit and enjoy the ambience of the store and the views of the marina.
Visitors entering the store encounter a reveal into the massive volume of the dome, where they can explore curated Apple products and accessories, receive personal technical support from Geniuses, or simply take in the view of Marina Bay. The Forum is centred around a Video Wall, which will serve as the stage for Today at Apple sessions featuring Singapore’s artists, musicians, and creators. Entrepreneurs and developers interested in receiving training and advice can meet with Apple team members in Apple’s first underwater Boardroom, located on the lower level of the store.

New Apple’s store in Singapore, is a place which connects customers with Apple's product and services. Its location and design will make Apple Marina Bay Sands a new landmark of the town and another design destination.
