Kinetic design, beside design qualities possess some types of physical movement as additional value.
Kinetic design can reposition parts of their structure, and in that way change appearance of the product, change functions or add other qualities and transformation possibilities.
In the 21st Century, new technologies, new materials are opening new frontiers of product development in order to respond to the requirements: demand, the market, space or environmental conditions.
Changes-New quality in the space
Most man-made objects have a static form, while everything natural in this world including people is subject to constant development and adaptation to their surroundings.
The kinetic design tries to find an answer and ways for a product to adapt to the changes and user/space needs.
1. Changes the quality of light with a physical action
The idea of changing the shape and quality of light on the lamp Twist was supported with appropriate materials. The polypropylene strips guarantee flexibility, aluminium applied on the structure and some decorative parts enable lightness of the product. The handle and canopy were made of ash as a contrast to other materials.
At a first glance, Twist looks like traditional pendant lamp. But it is between traditional and modern. It was designed with the intention of altering the quality of light with a simple, physical action.
The Twist Pendant Light is the coolest lamp ever
With the rotation of a discrete, wooden knob, thin, white strips twist and tighten around a central axis, perfectly synchronized to squeeze together and deflate the form, changing the amount of light allowed to escape. A twist in the opposite direction re-inflates the shade, opening the spaces within the array of strips, and brightening the room once again.
With these activities, the user manually can change the shape, light and atmosphere in the space.
2. Interior conditions impact on light and shadow
The Focus is for those who are looking for something different. It is mobile, the spatial installation which consists of many flat and lightweight lenses with structure hung from the ceiling. The spatial object changes the position, the lenses sways and rotates gently, diffuse the collected light and transform the interior. These spatial objects create new changeable scenery and introduce dynamics in our space. So, they change our perception of the space which becomes more interesting.
3. Breathing transformed into the movement of light
Breath of Light’s is an interactive, dynamic lighting installation presented during Milan Design 2018. The installation connects innovative design idea, technology and extraordinary material as Bohemian’s crystals are.
The installation is made from a series of opal crystal bubbles that create an intriguing path of light as visitors contribute their breaths.
Visitors are integral to the exhibition, becoming a part of it with every breath they share. The four sensors were inserted at various ends of the installation, encouraging visitors to breathe or blow in order to activate the lighting. The installation is even more interesting with sound effects created by the movement of light.
Breath of Light takes light interactivity involving people with the light in a new way, create new relations between a person and the object as well as people between themselves.

4. Mechanical changes in shape, colour and light
Meadow is moving installations, interactive sculptures and lighting in the same way. The kinetic sculpture consists of 18 mechanical flowers that open and close in a harmonious way creating an interesting sensation from below.
The installation was the result of the collaboration of designer and scientists, programmers, engineers, and other specialists in the development of projects.
As an upside-down landscape sculpture Meadow reacts to the visitors. Integrated sensors translate the presence of visitors into command and each flower starts to grow slowly, expands the light inside, mixing the light colour and the gradient colour of the fabric, illuminating the entire area.

All flowers create the installation that attracted the attention of the viewer, change the quality of the space through changes of the shape, colour and light.
5. Colour-changing Furniture
Colour flow is a cabinet with a lenticular surface that can change its colour depending on position and movement of the viewer. The chameleon pieces are not kinetic but their visual changes depend on the position of the viewer. This change builds the specific relationship between the object and the user.
The pieces change colour by applying a lenticular surface to two storage pieces, both of which vary in colour gradients. The mini collection comprises of a freestanding wardrobe ranges in shades of greens and blues whilst a smaller sideboard highlights blues with pinks.
6. Understanding time from the size and shape
A Kinetic Timepiece showing time in a new way, through shape and pattern.
It is a moving clock that changes its flower-like frame throughout the day when the sun is higher in the sky (midday) the clockface is at its biggest. In the evening (6 pm) the clock is at its smallest. This clock gracefully expands and contracts with each passing hour of the day. Thanks to the specific structure it shows the time from the shape of the clock face, not only with the position of the hands.

7. The dynamism of the public seating
An urban seating IDO is an adaptable, dynamic, customizable and functional bench with recommended fixation of the structure to the ground. The bench consists of an adjustable number of solid wood pieces supported on an electro-galvanised steel structure with a polyester powder coated finish. The pieces are of high-quality glue-laminated timber from sustainably managed forest with four coats of wood stain. The shape of seating segments following the lines of a boomerang. Each boomerang rotates to create a continuous and constantly changing position that allows for innumerable seating compositions and configurations.

8. Outdoor, animated artwork
Can Buyukberber at MGM National Harbor
Technology is the key factor in the realization of Multiverse a new digital sculpture & animated artwork by Can Buyukberber . In collaboration with Obscura Digital, selected animated artworks from “Multiverse” series became a part of 60 feet tall permanent outdoor LED installation at MGM National Harbor, Washington D.C.
Kinetic design opens new possibilities for designer to create products with new qualities and performances which provide adequate and more intriguing answer on the customer needs. The realization of such projects will be possible only with benefits of technology and multidisciplinary cooperation. It is expected that this added value of the product will help businesses achieve their goals on the market.
