Squeezed lemon juice has a wide range of applications: cooking salty and sweet dishes, preparing cocktails or consuming fresh juice. The basic characteristics of small household items are functionality, aesthetic attractiveness and affordable price. The main function of the lemon squeezer is to press out the juice without seeds if possible. Easy and safe use, easy maintenance, product quality, with all other characteristics defined by regulations for this type of product are no less important features. 

Design communication investigated how designers responded to the theme of designing a manual Lemon squeezer.

We present to you our selection of models.

The form of the Mysqueeze squeezer is simple and elegant, in the shape of a lemon. Although made of stainless steel, its hollow body makes the impression of lightness, while the metal strips give it dynamism. It fulfills the function of squeezing a lemon in a simple way, in the hands of users. All you have to do is place Mysqueeze in the middle, between the two halves of the citrus and squeeze the juice by pressing with your hands from the outside. The user can decide if he is going to squeeze the whole lemon or only a few drops of juice. My squeezer received the Pure Creativity Award, by the jury chaired by Philip Stark and Sir Terrence Conran. This small kitchen accessory with a minimalistic form does not require much space for storage and is easy to maintain.

Valerio lemon squeezer was designed by Guido Venturini. The product is made of one material, stainless steel. Compered to Mysqueeze this tool has a handle that makes it easier to use. The handle is with ergonomic features and allows comfortable use for different users (hand sizes). The end of the handle is ball-shaped and prevents the hand from slipping off the handle. It also allows the product to stand upright on a flat surface. This squeezer is functional, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing.

Juce Bruce lemon squeezer is made of one piece of wood. It fulfils the function of squeezing the juices of lemon, orange and other citrus fruits. Bruce is used by placing the upper part on half of the citrus and then twisting and turning until the required amount of juice is squeezed. It is 15 cm high and can stand upright on a flat surface. The compact form has ergonomic characteristics that are the result of simple interventions on the body of the product. Aesthetic characteristics contribute to the fact that the whole product resembles the head of a good man. Bruce attracts the smile of users and brings good vibes and mood to the kitchen. Juice Bruce is a product of simple form, made of ordinary material, but with character and personality.

Juicers designed by Elinor Portnoy are made entirely of glass. The shape of the product is simple, but the material used and the manufacturing technology have contributed to making this kitchen tool look attractive. Glass in several colours, detected by cold processing makes the product look so beautiful. The product recognizability comes from usage layers of different colours that play with textures and transparency.  The body of the Juicer is empty, so the product is convenient to handle because it is not heavy while the outer layer is sandblasted for better grip. The product fulfils its initial function but has added value. With its sculptural characteristics, not in the shape but its finishing, it certainly makes a sophisticated accent in contemporary kitchen space. 

Conchiglie is a lemon squeeze made of silicone. Practically, it is not a squeezer, but only a shell designed to help the user squeeze a lemon. Thanks to the characteristics of the material, the product is flexible and serves as a membrane that helps the user reach the maximum amount of seedless juice. Conchiglie has an additional function because the user can save unused lemon in it for later use.

Citrus press fulfils its function in a different way. The two different functions usually performed by the press and the funnel are combined here in one product.  When the citrus is turned towards the core of the Citrus press and pressed, the juice is obtained without the pips. The squeezed juice flows into the desired jug or glass, through the handle of the press, which in this case functions as a funnel. The materials used for the realization of the product are plastic and stainless steel. This kitchen tool is easy to maintain and can be washed in the dishwasher. The product is simple, attractive in design and, above all, practical. Citrus press received Red Dot Award 2019.

Helix Citrus Juicer is of a more complex structure. It consists of 2 parts which mech each other and complete the mechanism for squeezing lemons and limes. The size of the handles is comfortable to hold for different users.

The unique twisting action makes it easier to squeeze the juice with less effort. All parts are durable, made of stainless steel and nylon. The lower part is hollow and allows the juice to fall directly into the required place. The Helix squeezer is above all functional and useful in the kitchen.

Mandarin Citrus Squeezer with goblet was designed by Stefano Giovannoni. This juicer consisting of two separate parts is at first glance, with a hidden function. The Chinese man's hat, when turned upside down, becomes a squeezer while the lower vessel catches the squeezed juice. The juicer is with small openings around the edge of the rim mean that the pips are retained when pouring off the juice. The cup, shaped like the Chinese man face, can accept the juice of a few oranges or lemons.  This juicer is multifunctional because the lower part serves as a large cup to drink or for serving. After use, it is quick and easy to clean. In addition to functionality, this juicer is a fun, modern decoration for the kitchen.

Urchin is a ceramic lemon squeezer beautifully shaped, functional and easy to use. The surface of the squeezer top, unlike other parts, is rough. This processing improves the adhesion of citrus and facilitates squeezing. All you have to do is put lemon on a squeezer, press it lightly. The resulting juice flows straight into the lower container. The design of the container enables easy and precise pouring of juice from it. The attractiveness of the product lay in the sculptural shape with its delicate, but also different textures of surfaces that wre selected depending on the function. The elegance of the product is also contributed by the fact that it is made of one material and that it is one colour.

The design of this product was inspired by its purpose, and both its functionality and shape make it easy to press citrus fruit. Citrus Citrus-Squeezer is made of thermoplastic resin. It has geometric shapes with rounded edges. The product is primarily functional with a juice container and ease of pouring juice from it. What separates it from the classic shape of a lemon squeezer is precisely this part for pouring juice that is elongated, elegant and functional too. The simplicity of the product is contributed by the material itself and its transparency so that it almost becomes invisible.

Calista is a lemon squeezer and pourer made of cold, stainless steel and has a simple, elegant look. The product resembles a shell in shape and consists of two connected parts. Users simply insert a halved lemon between the parts of the Calista and press. The juice collected in the lower part can be easily poured even with the lid closed and served without seeds and without dripping. Thanks to its simple, minimalist shape, cleaning squeezer is as easy as using them. This elegant and ergonomic product is modern, attractive and practical. Calista received Red Dot Award (2011) and Gia Design Award (2011). 

Considering the presented models, we found that designers responded to the same brief in different ways. We showed how they balanced aesthetic features with functionality in their design in a response to the task at hand.
