Home Office Writing Desks Creative Ideas

Some desks have the possibility to close off the working surface and hide their primary function, at first glance. For such a solution, designers are looking for inspiration in tradition, in this case in a traditional secretary's desk.

These desks have different transformation possibilities. The writing surface can fold down and closes to hide inside content when not in use. The worktop can be closed off with wooden or glass parts. In some cases, the secretary desk is with curved roll top which rolls up to expose the writing surface. 

The modern secretary contains small storage areas located in the back of the desk or above worktop in the form of drawers or compartments. They help the user to store accessories and maintain the order in the work environment.

The modern secretary has some additional functions in order to enable working, surfing (the Internet) or entertainment activities. They possess the cables and power supplies, integrated socket for connecting all kinds of electronic devices. The hidden ventilation prevents risks while the lighting provides the comfort of the user together with extendable shelves or parts.

A new approach to the work activities

Michele De Lucchi designed Secretello for Molteni & C. It is a desk designed as a modern, functional workstation. It is the reinterpretation of the theme of the secrétaire, realized in a contemporary way. The designer created a working module made of a solid natural oak frame and envelope of the extra-clear safety glass. The chosen materials offer complete transparency without the possibilities of privacy to the user. The bottom door is with flap and easily transform in the writing top. The upper door is equipped with a pivoting opening mechanism. 

This workstation is pretty high 163cm and the elegant lines of the curved upperparts are a dominant aesthetical factor of the item.

Secretello desk can be equally used in the office or home.

It represents a new approach to work activities with an answer to all functional requirement of the user. At the same time with its glass walls, Secretello provides specific protection and safe place for work to the user.

Writing desk with storage

Jasper Morrison designed contemporary writing desk Ink for Molteni&C. It is made of American walnut. The desk is with the simple, trapezoidal shape which enables stability. When incorporated in the interior, this desk hides its primary function. Opening the door, it transforms into the tabletop. Inside the compartment are three drawers, LED lighting and another compartment fitted with sockets for connecting all kinds of electronic devices. Upperparts of this unit are used for storage of the work accessories. Equipped this way Ink answer to the need of the contemporary user.

André Schelbach designed Ms. Moneypenny Desk for Yomei. This desk meets the needs of the contemporary user. The well-established cabling accessories plus multiple sockets and the lighting, together with three stainless steel drawers, one hidden compartment and an extendible leather shelf contribute that the peace is functional. The appearance is a combination of round and square forms. The characteristics feature of this desk is a round, fan-shaped hood made of leather and metal. The small items made of stainless steel enliven the surface and provide optical highlights which are additionally emphasized by the indirect lighting. Designed this way, the desk is elegant with attention to detail.

The reminiscent of the past

Tomoko Azumi  designed At-At Home desk for Röthlisberger .

The shape of the desk is reminiscent of Biedermeier-style bureaus. It has a drop-down lid, which when open serves as a desktop. The interior is simple but highly functional. It offers space for laptops of all sizes, cables and power supplies for electronic devices can be stowed in a special compartment. Even fountain pens and paper have their own place.

Base and sides are made of solid pear. The desktop is veneered in a pear or black stained oak. Secret compartment, for cables, plugs and power supplies are available to the user.

At-At Home can easily fit into the interior depending on the needs. By closing the lid the desk become the furniture item with hidden work function .

Multifunctional item

László Szikszai design Secretary desk&dressing table Belle for Sixay Furniture.

At first glance, Belle is closest to the classical secretary, but it is a writing desk for the contemporary user. 

If needed, with one simple movement Belle converts to a modern multimedia station where a maximum 15-inch laptop or tablet can fit and where you can charge your phone. This is possible by two secretly integrated socket and by a sophisticated hidden ventilation system and cable storage unit. The small, attractive drawers and compartments help to maintain the order in the work environment.

 Belle is multifunctional furniture. It can serve as a writing desk and makeup stand. Opening up the tabletop, a makeup stand with mirror will appear.

The comfort of the user

Esa Vesmanen designed modern lightweight desk Bureau for Horm (2013). It is a small desk (60x90cm) suitable for different spaces, especially small homes. The aesthetical characteristic of the design is based on a combination of painted surfaces and natural solid walnut legs. The functional possibilities offer a few advantages. The upper part of the Bureau desk can close easily. The inside space serves as small storage (for work equipment…), protecting the privacy of the user. A part of the tabletop can be extended for 17 cm and together with the inside light increase the comfort of the user. 

The desk with such a characteristic fulfils the multifactual requirements of the space.

 

The presented examples of modern secretary desks are my choice of available models.

They are suitable for various interiors, for homes or offices. The modern secretary has certain advantages for small homes. It can be used as a workplace for one or more family members. Incorporated in the living space, the desk can hide electronics devices when not in use. The possibilities of transformation enable multifunctional use of the living space. 

It will be up to the future user to decide whether the models, their dimension, functional and aesthetic characteristic of the modern secretary desk are satisfactory for his Home office.
